Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) History And Secrets

Hello, my name is Pradeep. I am from Tiruchirappalli district. So I know Tiruchirappalli and its surroundings very well. Tiruchirappalli (Tiruchirappalli or Trichinopoly) lies in the central part of the state of Tamil Nadu in India. It is the oldest city. It is the capital of Tiruchirappalli district. tiruchirappalli is a big city in Tamil Nadu. It’s the third biggest city by size and the fourth biggest by population. Hyderabad is the sixth biggest city. It lies on the banks of the Cauvery River and was the capital of the Cholas in present-day Trichy.

At the top of the famous Rock Fort is a unique temple named Uchi Pilliyar dedicated to Lord Ganesha, unlike anywhere else in India. Tiruchirappalli is one of the 10 cleanest cities in India. MG Ramachandran (1980–1984), a former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, wanted to make Trichy the capital. But after his death, they could not finish this plan. But even today, Trichy stands as the second capital city of Tamil Nadu.

Name reason

An eleventh-century inscription in the cave says that a Jain monk named ‘Sira’ stayed and practiced penance in the cave found in the Trichy Rock fort. It is believed that the school of the saint “Sira” is called Sirapalli and that is the name of the town. A 16th-century inscription mentions Tiruchirappalli as Tiru-sila-palli (meaning: “holy-rock-town”), which suggests that the name may have been derived from it. Some other scholars think that it may also be derived from “Tru-chinna-palli” (holy small town).

History

Tiruchirappalli during the Carnatic War, 1751
Trichy, 1955
Tiruchirappalli is one of the oldest inhabited cities in Tamil Nadu. The history of this city dates back to B.U.M. Two thousand years ago. As the capital of the early Cholas, B.U.M. From the 3rd century BC. Archaeologists have identified Varayur, which existed until the 3rd century AD, as a region in the vicinity of present-day Tiruchirappalli. 20 km from Kallanai Urayyur (Urayyur also known as Kozhiyur), the world’s oldest dam built by Karikal Cholan. is far away.
P.O. In the 5th century the city came under the rule of the Pallavas. In the 6th century, Mahendravarman I, who ruled South India, built several umbrella temples at the Rock fort. After the fall of the Pallavas, the later Cholas ruled the city till the 13th century. After the fall of the Cholas, the city came under the rule of the Pandyas. They ruled from 1216 to 1311. In 1311, Malik Kapur defeated the Pandits and captured the city. Malik Kapur’s army of Delhi Sultan captured many priceless items. They closed the temple for 60 years as they desecrated the Aranganathan temple. Due to the Malikapur invasion, people preserved Arangan Thiruvuruvam in Tirumala by taking it on a street walk. After the Muslim rule, the city came under the Vijayanagara Empire. Then his governor of this region was under the Madurai Nayaks till 1736.

Calling ceremony

Every year, on the 18th day of the Tamil month of Aadi, women and girls from families gather to worship the Kaveri River at Tiruchirappalli. They pray for the happiness and well-being of their families.

For this special occasion, they bring various offerings to the river. These offerings include garlands, tamarind, incense sticks, turmeric powder, kumkum, coconuts, betel leaves, fruits, jaggery, yellow thread, camphor, vibhuti, sandalwood, coins, fragrant flowers, honey, paneer, banana leaves, and more.

They go to the riverbank and offer these items to the river goddess. As part of the ritual, they prepare and offer sweet pongal and white pongal as a symbol of devotion. While offering these food items, they pray to God, seeking His blessings.

MGR’s Plan to Make Trichy the Capital

When MGR was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, he started a plan to make Trichy the capital of the state. However, opposition and political circumstances prevented this plan from being carried out.

Since the state’s capital, Chennai, is located at one end of Tamil Nadu, it was difficult for people from the southern part of the state to reach the government offices there. MGR thought that making Trichy, which is located in the center of Tamil Nadu, the capital would make it easier for all people in the state to access the government. That’s why he announced a plan in 1983 to make Trichy the capital. Unfortunately, he couldn’t complete this plan.
